Adolescents and Child Psychology

Are you looking for a child psychologist in Madrid? Have you noticed any changes in your child’s behaviour? Do they seem more withdrawn or isolated? Or maybe they are more irritable, snapping more often, or with more tantrums than usual? Do you feel that your child has distanced themself from you or that you don’t seem to understand each other? Have their grades suddenly dropped? Are they more defiant, and you don’t know how to deal with it? Are you worried about their relationships with friends?

What to expect from child and adolescent therapy

In child and adolescent therapy we would be working with both the minor and the parents on social, emotional and behavioural aspects.

The sessions have a dynamic component where, through games, role-play, etc., difficulties are worked on in a fun way that is adapted to the child’s age.

Our team of specialists in clinical psychology for children and adolescents is made up of multilingual professionals with extensive experience in both clinical and educational contexts.

In child and adolescent therapy we work with children of all ages, although the younger the child is, due to age-related limitations, the more we would work with the parents.

Meanwhile, with teenagers it is important to mention that, in order to preserve the therapeutic alliance, the sessions are mainly carried out with the adolescent, whereas communication with the parents would take place separately and not after each session.

What if I want to learn more tools as a parent?

Children do not come with an instruction manual, and sometimes parenting can be overwhelming.

At Open Psychology we offer specific sessions with parents (“parenting sessions”) where we provide emotional support as well as personalised strategies to manage day-to-day challenges.

When to go to therapy

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the questions above, then it seems like it may be convenient to seek advice on how to tackle any of those changes you have observed in your child. However, bear in mind that sometimes these changes do not manifest themselves at home but at school, either in the child’s academic performance or in a social context, so it may be their teachers who share these concerns with you first.

What problems can we help you with?

Our team has experience working with a wide variety of problems, such as:

  • Attention deficit disorder with/without hyperactivity
  • Emotional dysregulation (anger management, frustration and emotional discomfort)
  • Behavioural disorders (defiant behaviour, tantrums, boundaries etc.)
  • Depression
  • Anxiety (phobias, fears, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder, selective mutism)
  • Enuresis/ Encopresis
  • Social skills
  • Addiction to new technologies

Further information

Child and adolescent therapy has the following structure:

1st session: lasts 50 minutes and is carried out only with the parents to gather information about their child’s upbringing, early experiences, the parents’ perception of when the problem started and in what circumstances it is manifesting itself, etc.

2nd session: lasts 50 minutes and is carried out only with the child in order to get to know them, establish a good therapeutic relationship, listen to what their perception is and what goals they would have, etc.

The rest of the sessions: 40 minutes with the child (where the therapeutic tools are put into practice) and 10 minutes with the parents to give feedback and teach exercises that can be done at home to reinforce what has been worked on in the session.

* In the case of adolescents, the 50 minutes of the session would be only with the teenager. However, parents can make a separate appointment to receive feedback, share the progress or difficulties they are observing in the adolescent, and learn tools that can be put into practice at home. These sessions with parents would not take place during the same session with the adolescent so as not to interfere with their therapeutic relationship.
